Brew Christmas

Still looking for that special gift for that special person? Or for that hard-to-buy-for friend? Or even if you’ve been naughty or nice, we still have the perfect gift: BEER! I mean, socks are always cool, but c’mon…beer! And you’re in luck: this weekend, starting Thursday 12/14 and running through Sunday 12/17, spend $50 on all packaged (bottles and cans to-go) beer, take 10% off. $100? 15%. And spend $200…save 20%! Happy holidays, y’all.

And be sure to visit Mueller on Tuesday, December 19, for a beer and holiday treat pairing, curated by WhichCraft’s own Candace. Expect candy canes, cookies, and of course, a corresponding beverage to complement them. We love hosting these events, and we know you’ll love attending it. Price is $10 for four 5oz pours, along with a snack for each one, and it’ll run 5-9pm. Menu and beer details are still getting ironed out, but it’ll be a doozy. Check out the Event Page here. We hope to see you there for it. And don’t worry, it’s not first come, first served, so show up any time between 5 and 9. Cool? Cool.

Finally, tonight is the Austin Beer Guide Awards, where the local beer community all come together to celebrate the best this town had to offer over the last year. If you’ve been interested in meeting the people behind your favorite breweries or bottle shops, this is the place to be. And be sure to cheer on all the awards, too. This shindig goes down at ABGB on Oltorf (close to your favorite local bottle shop), and starts at 8pm.

New Beers This Week

(All beer available at both WhichCraft locations unless otherwise noted)

Back in Stock: Goose Island BCB Stout

Santa Fe Adobe Igloo – A New Mexican answer to the classic Winter Warmer: dark red, full-bodied, and malt-forward. Traditionally, Winter Warmers are balanced with extra hops or a Wintery spice blend. This, instead, draws on rich culinary heritage and focuses on cacao nibs and red chile flakes. 6% ABV / Santa Fe, NM / Availability: Good / SoLa Only

Martin House Cookies n Cream – Cookies (Cookie Dough Stout) and Cream (Blonde with lactose and vanilla bean). The idea is that you can mix them (and everybody totally will), but they’re great standalones, too. The golden ratio for mixing so far seems to be 80% Cream, 20% Cookie. Each 4pk contains two cans of each beer. 6.2% ABV – Cookies, 6% – Cream, Fort Worth, TX / Availability: Decent

Deep Ellum Freak Flag – Inspired by a sour Flemish heritage, this unique red ale stands on its own as truly American. Fermented in barrels with bacteria, Freak Flag is anything but normal, with notes of barnyard oak, sweet malt, and tingling acidity. 7.8% ABV / Dallas, TX / Availability: Good

Victory Java Cask (12oz bottles) – Depth, complexity and richness occur when delicious ale ages in a barrel, just as friendship grows over the years. This stout was created in collaboration with Philadelphia’s Standard Tap and Johnny Brenda’s restaurants. Using their delicious hand-roasted JB’s Coffee, the bourbon barrels deliver a bold and robust, chocolate malt-tinged stout. 14.3% ABV / Downingtown, PA / RateBeer 99 / Availability: Decent

Victory Wisdom’s Hour  – Behold, the magical complexity that is Wisdom’s Hour. This barrel-aged American sour ale features brettanomyces aromas and tart plum flavors that merge beautifully with undertones of spice, oak, and chocolate. Kettle acidification and aging on a mix of French and American oak red wine barrels give this beer a unique, drying, tannic finish. 9.5% ABV / Downingtown, PA / Availability: Decent / SoLa Only

Shacksbury Ginger Spritz – Low ABV session cider inspired by the classic Italian spritz tradition. Light body with ginger and citrus notes. 3.9% ABV / Shoreham, VT / Availability: Good

Shacksbury Deer Snacks – Meet Deer Snacks, a new canned wild apple limited release, and the first in their “Artist Series.” Unfiltered and unapologetic. Made from wild Vermont apples and fermented with wild yeast. 5.5% ABV / Shoreham, VT / Availability: Decent

Mikkeller Red & White – A hybrid between a Red Ale and Witbier, added a lot of American hops and bitter tropical orange peel. 8% ABV / Copenhagen, Denmark / RateBeer 96 / Availability: Decent

Jester King Figlet – Collaboration with Franklin Barbecue. Farmhouse ale refermented with smoked Texas figs. 6% ABV / Austin, TX / Availability: Decent

New Braunfels Brewing Heavenescent – Barrel-aged sour wheat that is a blend of multiple barrels of Blondine from that cellar. Some are second-use from previous projects, others are fairly neutral, and all blend together to create a complex sour beer. 5% ABV / New Braunfels, TX / Availability: Good / SoLa Only

Brooklyn Naranjito – The vivacious fruit lends a burst of juiciness, a fresh, ticklish aroma and a decidedly refreshing finish to this American pale ale. It’s amazing what a little orange (naranjito) can do. 4.5% ABV / Brooklyn, NY / Availability: Good / SoLa Only

Breckenridge Nitro Chocolate Orange – Brewed with orange zest and locally sourced cacao (cold-pressed unroasted cocoa beans). Mandarina hops impart subtle aromas of tangerine which enhance the citrus flavors. The velvety texture of the nitrogen head completes this decadent wintertime indulgence. 6% ABV / Denver, CO / Availability: Good / SoLa Only

Deschutes American Wheat – Originally brewed in small batches at their pubs, this crowd-pleasing American-style ale delivers a tempting citrus aroma and light wheat character. 5% ABV / Bend, OR / Availability: Good / SoLa Only

Austin Beerworks Sputnik – Oats. Cuvee Coffee. Alcohol. And we have liftoff! Like the sight of a comet, the appearance of Sputnik has the locals thanking the brewing gods. You get an intense coffee aroma and bold flavor that perfectly compliments the silky oats and high alcohol. It will take your taste buds to orbit. 8% ABV / Austin, TX / RateBeer 98 / Availability: Very Limited / Mueller Only

Prairie Coffee Noir Coffee Noir is Prairie Noir kicked up a notch! Whole roasted espresso beans are added to the barrels in order to enhance the roasted and chocolate malt flavors in this intense beer. 11.5% ABV / Tulsa, OK / RateBeer 96 / Availability: Limited

Prairie Noir Bourbon barrel-aged imperial oatmeal stout. They brew this beer with a huge amount of oats to give it an ever so silky mouthfeel. Notes of coffee, chocolate, and toasted marshmallow can be found in the flavor and aroma of this beer. Notes of whiskey and caramel are also packed into this beer. 11% ABV / Tulsa, OK / RateBeer 99 / Availability: Limited

High West Bourbon BA Victory at Sea – A bold, smooth brew with just the right amount of sweetness. They infused this robust porter with whole vanilla beans and San Diego’s own Caffe Calabria coffee beans. The subtle roasted notes and minimal acidity of the cold-brewed coffee balances perfectly with the sweet caramel undertones of the malt, creating a winning combination for your palate. 12% ABV / San Diego, CA / Availability: Decent /Arriving Friday

Deschutes Black Butte XXIX – 29th Birthday Reserve. Porter brewed with Dutched cocoa, Belgian cinnamon, and cayenne. 50% aged in Bourbon and Rum barrels. 12.2% ABV / Bend, OR / RateBeer 99
